You've probably noticed that almost every website you go to these days has a blog section. You may also be wondering if they know something that you don't. Whether you think a blog would make sense on your website or not is obviously your decision, but here are some reasons that companies like Microsoft are taking advantage of blog culture:

It's great for marketing: Using a blog for marketing purposes is all about building up trust in the users visiting your website. Due to the anonymous and faceless quality of many big company websites, it makes a huge difference to create a space where employees, for example, can post a blog. This lets the visitor see the human face of a business and also shows them the kind of people working for the company.

You can show your expertise: A blog is a great way to discuss issues in your industry and in doing so illustrate your experience in that field. This is good for promoting your business and showcasing the talents of your staff.

Search engines love them: Blogs allow you to mention your targeted keywords (e.g. What is a 'keyword'?) more than your standard pages, as they are dynamic and get updated on a regular basis. A search engine like Google will recognise that your keyword is appearing more often and see that you are actively producing content relevant to those terms. This can boost your ranking and get you closer to the first page of search results.

Build a following: By writing accurate, useful content for your website you provide a service that people will want to keep track of. If your business appeals to a niche audience then you could easily give them relevant content and build a dedicated group of returning visitors to your website.
